Welcome to "La Pagina en La Puerta"
...(the page in the door), the site about a very unique children’s library in Cusco, Peru. The library gives children a chance to cultivate the joy of reading; grow as people, realize their potential, and develop self esteem through reading in a positive and nurturing environment.
Though many countries have public libraries a library is atypical in Cusco. La Pagina en la Puerta is a great place for children to step through the door into the pages of the wonderful world of reading. The greatest treat is to see the face of a child the first time they come to the library because the child has never seen such books. Children come to read, listen to stories, do their homework, play educational games, and make new friends.
Though reading for pleasure is not a part of the
culture in Peru that is changing for the children of Cusco, at the library La Pagina en la Puerta. With each turn of a page, the children’s enthusiasm for reading intensifies and without realizing it, reading becomes one of their favorite past times.
Remember your childhood library? -- A wonderful place that was quiet; the only sound being "shhh" or "silence" from the librarian. Not so at this library. There’s a lot of wonderful book talk and sharing, children laughing over riddles and funny stories. Okay, occasionally the librarians remind children to talk in lower voices...
